I think it's wise to have someone who speaks Ukrainian or Russian accompanying you, especially in a provincial town like Nikopol. Traveling there by yourself might be risky, but if you use your common sence (e.g. you don't leave your car unlocked, pay with 100-dollar bills in a local small stores or walk outside after 10 pm (unless you're in downtown) ), you'll most likely be ok.
